They didn't see us coming
Mack I growled, giving a slight tug on the reins. The unruly two year old colt was trying to strike out at Streak. Matt and I were just warming up the pair and Mack was around hating his barn mate. They were two year old maidens, with great lines. Just the one was sweet and the other was just unruly, and feisty. I urged the dark bay colt into a trot, getting him to do some figure eights and some other stretches. When Matt and Streak were ready I nodded. We are going to run 5 furlongs, mock race. You keep Streak right behind up and as we come to the wire, pass us, but not by much. I hollered to him. The plan was really to upset Mack, so he would try to beat the other horses in his first race. The plan would be great for both horses racing styles. Mack was a front runner, and Streak was a stalker. I looked at Matt as I urged Mack into a gallop, taking position on the rail. It was a blowout gallop, not fast, just a light gallop. I didn't want to over work the horses before there first race. My ears ring with beats of hooves on the turf. I can tell Streak was right on our heels as Mack was pulls on the reins, wanting to go faster. He wanted to get as far ahead as possible, but I wasn't allowing it. Streak began to edge he way around us, and as he did Mack pinned his ears back and about pulled the reins out of my hands to go faster. I held tighten to him and pulled back a bit. I could fell his body tense beneath me. As we passed the wire, Streak was a neck ahead of us. Mack was not happy. As I pulled him down to a trot, he watched Streak with eyes full of anger. When Streak got close enough, he tired to nip out or kick at him. Mack! I said firmly, giving a sharp tag on the reins. The bay colt pinned his ears back and arched his neck, touching his chest. He pranced under me, breaking stride. I patted his shoulder affectionately. You will get them next time boy... I said cooed. He gave a sharp whinny and tossed his head, as saying, you betcha. I led him off towards the stables.
