Cool Cat and Jake Allen
We had a new resident at the stables last week. A tall, young bay thoroughbred colt. Seeing him walk of the trailer was just a wow moment. I was shocked on how gorgeous he was. How fit and well groomed he was. He just looked around had an 'oh well' look on his face. The next morning at feeding time he acted like he lived here his whole life. He like a been there, done that kind of horse. He just went with the flow of things and accepted whatever came to him. Today was the day. We were working out the horses, breezing some of the track and things, so today was the day I finally got to ride the new colt, Cooley as we started to call him around the stables. I smiled as I saw one of the stables leading him towards me. I nodded a thank you and took the reins. Hi Cooley... I said softly and rubbed his neck in a calming motion. I put my foot in the stirrup and pulled my self into the saddle. I adjusted my seat and made sure I had a good hold on the reins. Walk on... I said squeezing the colts side. He bounced forward, onto the dirt track. A few other horses passed us and he let out a surprising nicker. He pushed forward, wanting to catch up to some of his friends. Ah. Not right now. Time to work... I said and stood up in the stirrups and urged him forward into a trot. His ears pinned back as he went fort into a trot. His trot was very bouncy, and like a jackhammer. Nothing different than what I normally rode, but I guess I expected something different. I urged him into a canter, and it as smooth and very floaty. Wow. Felt like I was riding on water. After I was sure he was warmed up enough I pointed him towards the inside rail and urged him into a gallop. The dark bay colt shot fort like a bullet, and sprinted down the track as fast as he could. Woahhh... Easy Cooley. I said whispered, pulling him to a slow gallop. He pinned his ears back as soon as I made him slow. I smiled. I could tell he wanted to run faster, but I wasn't sure just how fast. Not right now. Save it for the race, bud. I whispered in a sly tone. After two furlongs of galloping at a slow pace I pulled him down to a canter. Slowed I pulled him down to a trot, than a walk. I sat down in the saddle and smiled. That was a good boy... I said softly as I urged him off the track. He pinned his ears back and stopped dead in his tracks. Whats wrong? I said in a concerned tone. Come on... I said kicking his side a bit to urge him forward. He snorted harshly and took a step back onto the track. I urged him forward again and he just took a step back. I thought for a moment and smiled. He wanted to go back on the track to run some more. No Cooley. You have to save it for the race buddy... I said and patted his neck. I sat deep in the seat, and kicked his side urging him forward once more. He flatten his ears as flat as they could go and walked forward. Oh great he was mad at me now, I thought. You will get over it I thought... Leading him off towards the stable.
